#NorthupNews – Dala Horse

I had a feature, called Julie’s Jewels, on Norns Triad Publications’ blog. I used it to share tidbits about my life, which I tied into book suggestions (because you know I love books). I thought it might be fun to do something similar here. Hence, the birth of this series, #NorthupNews.

The cool thing is that my partners, Sahara Foley and Karen J. Mossman, have similar features on their blogs. It is a way for us to connect with our readers. Hopefully, it is as interesting to you as it is for us.

Dusty & I drove through a small town in Iowa, called Swedesburg during our April 2023 travels. We noticed a quaint Scandinavian museum with a huge dala horse. Having close family friend with a proud Swedish heritage, we stopped at The Swedish American Museum to snap some photos. We hoped to show our love and support while learning more about this culture.

The traditional wooden carving of Dalecarlian horses, also known as Dala horses, originated in the Swedish province of Dalarna (Dalecarlia). Painted in the local designs from the regions they’re manufactured, and most commonly used as children’s toys, they became a symbol of Sweden.
