My Book Review of The Wampanoag (First Americans)

schoolThe Wampanoag by Pamela Jain Dell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Excellent Nonfiction for Kids

This is the first book of this series for juveniles. As my grandkids are getting into history more and more, I felt it prudent to explore literature for them. Since they homeschool, I’m able to give some input.

I felt this book was well written and researched. It gave good resources, extra activities to help bring the lessons alive, and relevant information to link history to the present. The Thanksgiving connection was the best description I’ve read for the origins of this holiday, honestly.

I certainly recommend this book and intend to continue the series. It’s appropriate for grades schoolers. Probably best for kids 8-12 (middle grade), I do think this is appropriate for younger, depending on maturity.

This would make an excellent resource for both literature and history. It would work well for a Thanksgiving lesson that can be tied into a home ec class to make the corn cakes recipe from inside the book. Also, an art project for the jewelry of Native American tribe wore included.
