The Ofrenda That We Built by Jolene GutiérrezMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Lovely Way To Learn Culture
I was drawn to this book for many reasons. First, I am of Hispanic/Latin descent and want to know more about my heritage. Second, I have found memories of learning about the various cultures that cultivated the family I was born into. Lastly, these are things I want to share with my grandkids, and the vibrancy of this book seemed a great way to help do it.
I loved the fun prose. It was a bit sing-songy, which is fun for young readers and helpful for engagement. The jaunty rhythm brought a happy feel that added to the festive holiday.
The author gave instructions on how to make your own ofrenda after the story, such as cool. I thought that was nice because it allows the option to partake in the culture, not just learn about The Day of the Dead. It gives readers a chance to bring literature into reality in a creative way that honors people.
I recommend this book. It is cheerful and educational. It encourages learning without pressure or judgment. It is warm and welcoming, sharing something special for the writer with the readers.
