Close Encounters in King Edmund’s Court by El HasMy rating: 3 of 5 stars
Interesting Concept
Since I love aliens and history, this was a no-brainer for a quick read. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations. Though there were some great moments, and I thought it was an interesting concept, it fell short for me.
The colloquialism didn’t reflect the historical dialect. There were moments when the author captured some of the Old English idioms, but mostly, it was all modern vernacular. This prevented depth between the Medieval world and the advanced culture of the aliens. It also removed a vital layer necessary for piece piece fiction.
I appreciated the subtle commentary on the human psyche and behavior. The author did a great job expressing ideas without being preachy or advancing any particular agenda, which I respect. I found the concepts incorporated in this tale relevant and poignant. They made the story more enjoyable for me.
I struggled with this story. Do I recommend it? I think a die-hard historical fiction reader will dislike the lack of accuracy for the time. However, sci-fi readers will enjoy this quick read, especially those who subscribe to ancient aliens or seek disclosure. Ultimately, judge for yourself.
