#BookMuse – The Cat Burglary

  • What is the title of your book?
    The Cat Burglary
    • Is it a standalone, part of a series, an anthology, or short story?
      • The book is a standalone.
    • Would you tantalize readers with a synopsis?
      • In this quirky crime novella, a woman finds herself in the middle of a burglary gone wrong.  Her cat gets kidnapped in the process, and she wants nothing more than to clear her name and get back to
        her peaceful life.
  • What inspired this tale?
This is going to sound weird, but I was working for a non-profit organization, and they recently purchased a large commercial building, which used to be owned by a funeral home.  There was a lot to do before the employees could move in, so I went in a few times to help sort things out.  During one of my last visits, I spent some time in the upstairs unit, which is basically like an apartment with a rooftop terrace.  I started imagining what it would be like to live there, and a crime story formed around that whole building.
The cat came into play because I had recently gone to a virtual reality experience where we could visit an Egyptian pyramid.  A sphynx cat was one of the virtual guides.
    • Did you have to do any research, and if so, what, and why?
      • I
didn’t have to do much research for this particular book. It was more a matter of confirming facts I already knew (or thought I knew) and minor details.
    • Did you learn anything new or surprising while you wrote this book that you’d like to tell us about?
      • I learned that some breads of Sphynx cats can be worth up to $10,000.

  • Who is the main protagonist of the story?
The main protagonist of the story is a woman named Dawn Larson.  She wanted to move out of her crappy studio
apartment and purchase a place of her own but real estate became too expensive.  She finally finds the perfect
condo in a quiet neighborhood, but soon after moving in, she finds herself in the middle of a burglary gone wrong. She had no self-defense training and is usually a shy person, but on that particular night, she had a bit too much to drink at her housewarming party. That leads to her speaking her mind in a quirky way.
    • Do you feel your character is relatable to readers of all ages?
      • No.  I’d say mainly adults.
What made you write this character? Were they based on a real person or something that inspired you?
      • I often base my characters on myself, and I like being quirky.
      • What should readers know about your protagonist?
        • She is a cat-mom who owns a Sphynx cat.
Do you consider the main character to be good or bad, and why?
      • The main character is good even though she is suspected of a crime.
    • What’s the objective of your character?
      • After being held at gunpoint and being caught leaving a building I was forced to break into, I desperately want to prove my innocence.  I also want to find my kidnapped cat.

  • Is there anything specific you’d like readers to know about this piece of work?
It’s fun and quirky crime fiction story.

  • What was your writing process like?  For example, do you use an outline, or do you let the story flow as you write (“pantser”)?
    • I just let the story flow and see where it will take me.  Once I had the basic draft I read it over a
bunch of times and new ideas would pop up.
  • Do you have a writing routine?  Like, do you get your cup of coffee to write in your office in silence, or do you prefer to sit on the deck with the radio playing in the background?  What atmosphere is conducive to your creativity?
    • I just need a quiet environment.
