My Book Review of Here Be Jinn (Fieldwork In Mesopotamia Book 1)

Informative Historical/Alternative Fiction

I love ancient Near Eastern history, especially Mesopotamia, so I was excited when I saw this title. Then I was disappointed when I began reading it because the author’s choices proved him a novice. However, I didn’t give up, and for that, I’m thankful. I ended up pleased with the story, enjoying it overall.

What I liked was the detailed history that supported the mythology. The author did a great job making it interesting and relevant. It tied the past to the present nicely.

I respected the way the author presented all his characters without bias. I was able to have empathy for the jihadist, Sayid, and compassion for his beliefs. Of course, that made it difficult whenever he behaved in a cold, heartless manner. Still, humanity is multifaceted, so it’s honest.

What I disliked, besides the poor start (which felt unimportant and disengaged from the plot), fell to simple contextual things (“melancholic feelings” instead of “melancholy” or a human holding a doorhandle to keep a supernatural creature out until ready, then the creature has “inhuman strength” again). It was frustrating in contrast to the incredible information given about culture and mythology.

Overall, this was a fascinating read. It has twists I didn’t expect, action to keep you captivated, and multiple layers that intertwine in unique ways. Don’t give up reading after the first 2 chapters, and you’ll be rewarded with a rich story that will leave you wondering!
