#BookMuse – Paranormal Investigation

  • What is the title of your book?
    Paranormal Investigation
    • Is it a standalone, part of a series, an anthology, or short story?
      • The book is a standalone.
    • Would you tantalize readers with a synopsis?
      • This fictional ghost story with a slice of humour was inspired by historical facts and true events.
      • Discover the dark history of Cornwall’s old jail, built in 1833, and follow the fictitious Roy family as they conduct a paranormal investigation inside the historic building. Their spooky venture evokes questions about a spirit possibly following them home.
  • What inspired this tale?
    • Did you have to do any research, and if so, what, and why?
      • After doing a guided tour of the Cornwall historic jail and conducting an amateur paranormal investigation, I reviewed information about the jail and its most popular inmates. I also watched our recorded footage and did a bit of research on paranormal activities and superstitions.
    • Did you learn anything new or surprising while you wrote this book that you’d like to tell us about?
      • The one thing that comes to mind is the superstition that seeing 6 crows together means death will follow you.

  • Who is the main protagonist of the story?
A middle-aged woman named Kristen Roy.
    • Do you feel your character is relatable to readers of all ages?
      • She’s probably more relatable to woman in general; especially those with strong maternal instructs.Ā  Anyone who believes in the supernatural, too.
What made you write this character? Were they based on a real person or something that inspired you?
      • This character was based on myself, and a paranormal investigation I did with my own husband and son.
      • What should readers know about your protagonist?
        • She is intuitive, and truly believes in ghosts.
Why are they important to you?
        • Without this character’s strong belief in the afterlife and spiritual communications, there wouldn’t be much of a story.
Do you consider the main character to be good or bad, and why?
      • She is definitely good.
    • What’s the objective of your character?
      • Kristen’s main objective is to communicate with ghosts.Ā
      • Her second objective should remain a secret for now, but let’s just say it has something to do with a ghost child.

  • Is there anything specific you’d like readers to know about this piece of work?
As I mentioned earlier, this story was inspired by my own paranormal investigation. But, I’ve learned that during such an investigation there are a lot of times where nothing happens and everything is up to interpretation. I used my experience as a base and embellished the story while still trying to keep it realistic.
    • Is there a moral or idea you’re trying to convey, and if yes, what?
      • There could really be live after death, and there are several ways to potentially communicate with ghosts who want to relay a message or have unfinished business.

  • What was your writing process like?  For example, do you use an outline, or do you let the story flow as you write (ā€œpantserā€)?
    • I had a basic outline in my head but let the story flow. As always, my characters sometimes surprised me.
  • Do you have a writing routine?Ā  Like, do you get your cup of coffee to write in your office in silence, or do you prefer to sit on the deck with the radio playing in the background?Ā  What atmosphere is conducive to your creativity?
    • I like silence when I write and hate being disturbed when everything is flowing.
    • Did any of your preference change while writing this title, and if so, what, and why?
      • I originally planned on writing a short story, and by the time I finished I realized it was much longer than anticipated and needed chapters.Ā  I also included a prologue and epilogue.
