My Book Review of Black Vault: A Short Story

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Unexpected & Interesting

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into with this story, but I’ve read work from this author before and knew she was good. As anticipated, Alma Katsu didn’t disappoint. She penned an unexpected, engaging, and interesting tale that offered a new twist on the modern UFO/UAP experience.

What I liked was the twist of known prejudices and how they could or can play into the UFO lore today. Is it misdirection, or are aliens real? If they are real, how long have we known, and how can we justify destroying people’s lives – their work, families, credibility – just to perpetuate whatever “truth” governments wanted perceived? And what happens to those people when the liars are brought for reckoning?

What I didn’t like was the tense. I didn’t think it was well kept in the present tense. I understand why the author felt this was right for the story, but there were moments when it was poorly executed, leaving me to reread a few sentences for clarity. Also, it’s too short. I wanted more.

I do recommend this story. Hopefully, this will be developed into a series. The potential is endless!!
