#DidYouKnow – Viticulture & Winemaking

#DidYouKnow is a Blog Series on www.jmnorthup.com and www.nornstriad.com

Viticulture is basically wine growing while vinification is making wine. The difference is essentially the cultivation of the grapes and then the process of actually making the wine from the fruit. Oenology (or enology) is the science and study of wine and wine making. A viticulturist is a cultivator of grape vines, applying what enologists know to the production of the crops. A sommelier is a wine steward, knowledgeable in all things wine, found in fancy restaurants, charged with wine and food pairing.

Viticulture is an agricultural production within horticulture, which can be defined as gardening for the purpose of food or medicinal ingredients as well as for comfort and ornamental purposes. Its process depends on what type of wine is being made. Whether a wine is red or white is determined by the grape itself and carbonation determines if it is a sparkling wine. Also, when you harvest the grape, where you acquire it from, and whether you crush or press it all have an impact on the final product. Fermentation and storage all play into the vinification process.

There’s a great deal of science and care behind a beautiful glass of wine.
