Happy Anne & Samantha Day!
Today is meant to honor two young women: Anne Frank and Samantha Smith.
We celebrate these amazing females bi-annually: on the summer and winter solstices. We do so because they were quiet voices that made a huge impact on history.
A victim of the Holocaust, Anne is remembered because of the diary she left behind. Not only did she chronical what it was like to be a Jew hidden away from the persecution of the Nazi regime, this 13-year-old girl showed humanity, compassion, forgiveness, and hope during desperate times. She was a beacon of light in a world of devastating darkness.
Samantha is known as America’s Youngest Ambassador. This youthful peace activist and actress, sadly, died in a plane crash when she was barely 13 years old. However, in November of 1982, she wrote a letter to Yuri Andropov, the leader of the Soviet Union, to address issues related to the Cold War. She was, also, a speaker for peace in Kobe, Japan. Like Anne, she made an indelible mark on this world, showing us that one person can make a difference.
